What You Need to Know about YouTube

November 18, 2013

What was once a cornucopia of sports bloopers and wedding fails is fast becoming a crucial part of marketing.

YouTube, Vimeo, and other video sites are now packed with promotional videos from brands small and large, looking to engage with their customers.

If you’re looking to start a YouTube or Vimeo channel for your brand, here are some things to keep in mind:

Consider All Platforms
Your YouTube videos will be viewed on desktops, laptops, tablets, phones, and smart TVs, so make sure your videos and your channel art look good on all of these platforms.

Monitor Length
Nobody wants to sit through a ten-minute video. Promotional videos are best kept between 30 seconds and a minute. Studies have shown that people tend to tune out after that.

Seed Your Channel Before Launch
There is no sense in hyping the launch of your YouTube channel if it only contains one video. Before rolling it out to customers, make sure you have a few videos to share. This will also give you time to tweak your channel’s appearance before sharing.

Plan Ahead
Maintenance is important when it comes to social media. If you’re going to take the time to create a YouTube channel, you should have a plan in place for updating and maintaining it. Figure out how frequently you’ll be able to upload new videos and stick to that schedule. If you are planning to allow comments, you must also be willing to to check your channel on a regular basis to monitor and remove any spam or inappropriate comments. If you aren’t willing to check on your channel every day, it might be a good idea to disallow comments.

Be Descriptive
When coming up with a title and description for your video, choose your words carefully. You’ll want people to find your video through search engines, so it’s important that you use clear, specific words that they might include in their search.

Make It Pretty
It’s not enough for your videos to look good; your channel has to be professional looking and reflective of your brand as well. Your channel will allow you to choose a masthead image and an avatar that will appear next to your name. Chooses images that will help viewers identify your brand and that are cohesive with each other. Remember – this is your chance to familiarize people with your brand, so make it count.
